Blue Square North Weekend Round-up

blue-square.jpgKettering Town extended their lead at the top of the table to five points at the top of the Blue Square North table after a 3-0 home victory against Worcester City. The Leicestershire side won courtesy of a Jon Brady goal in the first half, and two Craig Westcarr strikes later in the game.

Kettering’s win was complimented by AFC Telford dropping points with a 1-1 draw at Northolme against mid-table Gainsborough Trinity. Telford players scored both the goals, Turner putting through his own net, before Forsdick levelled four minutes later. Another side to lose ground in the title race was Harrogate Town, who were impressively beaten by a good Nuneaton Borough side. Jordan Stepien grabbed both the goals for the play-off chasers, either side of a Gareth Grant goal for the home side.

The other play-off chasing sides were in action at the weekend, with Southport getting back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at Tamworth. Gray grabbed a hat-trick for his team to propel The Sandgrounders back into the top five. Stalybridge Celtic sealed an important win as well with a resounding 3-0 success against Workington. A Smart penalty, followed by goals from Dean and Meechan was more than enough to give the Greater Manchester side a deserved win.

Elsewhere, Burscough kept their slim hopes of a play-off place alive after they secured a 3-2 win at home to fellow promotion rivals Hyde United. A Kilheeney penalty with 20 minutes left to play proved to be the decisive moment, giving the Lancashire club a much needed three points. Barrow, also with slight play-off dreams themselves, dealt a fine 5-1 drubbing to lowly Solihull Moors.

Down at the bottom of the table, Hinckley United managed an important 3-1 win at home to bottom club Leigh RMI to get onto a level points total with Hucknall Town. Wilding bagged a brace for the Knitters. Hucknall lost again themselves, surrendering the lead to crash 2-1 at home to Boston United. Vauxhall Motors also suffered a confidence-sapping 4-0 loss at Alfreton Town.

In the other game taking place on Saturday, Redditch United fans will have been leaving The Valley Stadium with smiles on their faces after beating Blyth Spartans 1-0. The northern side themselves not clear of the relegation mire at the bottom of the table.
